The air transport tax does not solve the ecological problem according to LFI and PCF

The tax on air transport decided by the government is far from sufficient, estimated Wednesday, July 10 the LFI deputy Adrien Quatennens, as well as the PCF, which sees only “a handout”. It is an “interesting signal”, but “it is not sufficient at all”, reacted the coordinator of France rebellious on LCI.

Adrien Quatennens, who does not believe “that a tax will give up these journeys”, considers it necessary to reflect on the “logic of always more travel by air”, while a doubling of the number of travelers in twenty years is announced. The rebels have with François Ruffin proposed to ban domestic flights that do not save more than 2 hours and 30 minutes compared to the same train journey, he recalled.

The tax “goes in the right direction in the absolute, but it is still a tinkering. On the ecological question I refuse this idea which consists in believing that we will solve the problem by taxes”, he said. insisted. Adrien Quatennens also estimated that in order not to penalize the French economy, the best would be to “ensure that this tax is shared, perhaps at European level and why not beyond”.

Implementation of an “eco-contribution” on plane tickets

The government announced Tuesday the establishment of an “eco-contribution” on plane tickets and the reduction of the tax advantage on diesel for heavy goods vehicles. From 2020, airlines will have to pay 1.50 to 18 euros on tickets for flights taking off from France – but not those arriving there.

The PCF also considered this tax insufficient, which should bring in 180 million euros from 2020. “We need two billion euros per year, not a handout”, and we must “do everything to reduce air traffic , which continues to increase at an unsustainable rate for global warming, more than 5% per year, “he said in a statement.

The Communists propose for their part “a level of at least 10 euros per ticket in economy class and at least 100 euros per ticket in business class”, so that the tax encourages “really to reduce air traffic”. “This fiscal tool should aim to replace the maximum number of trips made by plane by trips made by train”, according to the party.
